ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a set of therapeutic practices inspired by Eastern medical traditions.

Created over two millennia ago, acupuncture is one of the oldest treatments in the world. It consists of stimulating anatomical sites on or in the skin – the so-called acupuncture points.

What is acupuncture?

Different approaches for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases are carried out, however the most adopted procedure in the world today is the penetration of the skin by very thin and solid metallic needles, manipulated manually or through electrical stimuli. However, other practices were being formulated and thus acupuncture can be performed without needles, for example.

According to Chinese tradition, the technique is capable of adjusting the body's energy channels, called meridians in acupuncture, according to the balance of yin and yang. Western and modern medicine, however, suggests that the method stimulates the release of chemicals that alter the nervous system and can have effects throughout the body, promoting balance in the organism. Therefore, it is closely associated with organic disorders resulting from emotional tensions such as stress that can harm or interrupt the results of the diet.

purpose of acupuncture

Acupuncture seeks to recover the body as a whole by inducing regenerative processes, normalizing altered functions, strengthening the immune system and controlling pain.

Although research has shown that acupuncture can indeed deactivate areas of the brain associated with pain, it is not known exactly how the method constitutes a mechanism that sustains or contributes to the therapeutic effect on a person.

Anyway, the technique has survived for millennia, showing benefits to individuals with gastrointestinal, respiratory, muscular, urological, endocrinological, psychological and neurological, gynecological and even dermatological problems.

What the WHO says
(World Health Organization)

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the practice a complement to modern medicine. In the United States, it was only recently recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as a treatment option for back pain by the country's public health system.

In Brazil, acupuncture is recognized as a specialty in the health area and can be practiced by a qualified health professional.
